The benefits of coconut yogurt
So since I’ve been vegan I have not really missed yogurt one bit, however sometimes I have major FOMO when I see these beautiful yogurt parfaits on people’s instagram feeds. My heart breaks a little because I just know that cow’s milk yogurt is not the healthiest choice, but I’ve struggled to find a legit alternative.
I was shopping with Jack the other day and saw that a brand I recognized made an unsweetened vanilla coconut yogurt. I was intrigued so I pulled open the fridge door and immediately turned the container around to read the ingredients. I was looking for carrageenan because that is prevalent in so many non-dairy foods. Carrageenan is AWFUL for you, so PLEASE avoid it at all cost. That in itself is a post for another day, so remind me, k?
Anyways, the yogurt seemed to have pretty legit ingredients and NO added sugar. I also really loved that it contains 45% daily value of B12 per serving!! YAAAAS. This is a vegan girls dream. I will take my B12 where I can get it.
Also, now that Jack is eating all the foods I am eating I was pumped that I could give him this yogurt and not feel freaky about it, and he would have another great plant source for B12.
B12 is crucial for brain health and brain development.
So what’s the hype with the yogurt you ask? Well, let me tell you all the amazingness that is in coconut yogurt and why you can kiss your freaky deaky cow’s milk yogurt goodbye.
Besides being a certified Health Coach I wanted to dive a little further into some research on the benefits of coconut yogurt and this is what I found and it makes my heart happy.
- coconut yogurt also supplies several key vitamins and minerals and can have live and active cultures just like milk-based yogurts.
Much of the saturated fat in coconut yogurt is in the form of medium-chain triglycerides, which can help control weight, reduce the risk of atherosclerosis and boost immunity.
Six ounces of unsweetened coconut yogurt has 6 grams of fiber, which is 24 percent of the 25 grams women need each day and 16 percent of the 38 grams men require.
Coconut yogurt is a good source of bone-building calcium with between 25 and 30 percent of the daily value in each 6-ounce serving. You'll also get between 25 and 30 percent of the daily value for magnesium, a mineral essential for muscle function. A serving of coconut yogurt supplies between 25 and 30 percent of the daily value for vitamin B-12, crucial for red blood cell production, and vitamin D, vital for calcium absorption.
Now that you have all of this fabulous info I invite you to give it a try.
I know this may be a little controversial, but I love a good controversial topic to get the heart pumpin!
I think there’s some lack of education and knowledge around the “importance” of dairy.
We are the only creatures that drink another animal's milk. It’s not our milk, it’s not designed for us.
The milk of a cow is designed for it’s calf just like our breast milk is meant for our babies. According to Dr. Michael Klaper, the purpose of cow’s milk is to turn a 65-pound calf into a 700-pound cow as rapidly as possible. Cow’s milk IS baby calf growth fluid. No matter what you do to it, that is what the stuff is.
A huge chunk of the population can’t even digest cow’s milk and it can lead to inflammation in the body.
I totally understand that people love it and I love everyone and their food choices, but I am happy to educate and share some yummy healthy alternatives!!
Do you have any non dairy yogurts you love? I would love to try more!!
