Starbucks Coconut Milk Is F-ing Bad For You

UGHHH it’s so annoying to me when companies especially HUGE ass companies like Starbucks take advantage of buzz words and health fads and use it to make themselves richer while doing their customers and injustice and a fucking unhealthy injustice at that.

Just because they are advertising a “coconut milk” option doesn’t mean it’s even close to being actually coconut milk, or even good for you.

Starbucks coconut milk is not a healthy alternative.

It’s so important to read labels and ask to see ingredients on things.

Here’s the nutrition low down straight from Starbucks website. The sugar content is so high I can’t believe it! 17g of sugar in a grande cup of coconut milk!!

 

Ingredients

Coconut Milk [Water, Coconut Cream, Cane Sugar, Tricalcium Phosphate, Coconut Water Concentrate, Natural Flavors, Sea Salt, Carrageenan, Gellan Gum, Corn Dextrin, Xanthan Gum, Guar Gum, Vitamin A Palmitate, Vitamin D2 (Ergocalciferol)].

Carrageenan is in a lot of dairy alternatives and is NOT GOOD FOR YOU!! I am SHOCKED Starbucks would allow this. Here’s a small bit about the dangers of carrageenan and you can read more by clicking here.

“More worrisome, undegraded carrageenan – the type that is widely used in foods – has been associated with malignancies and other stomach problems.

In 2012, Joanne K. Tobacman, MD, who has published multiple peer-reviewed studies that address the biological effects of carrageenan, addressed the National Organic Standards Board on this issue and urged reconsideration of the use of carrageenan in organic foods. According to Dr. Tobacman, her research has shown that exposure to carrageenan causes inflammation and that when we consume processed foods containing it, we ingest enough to cause inflammation in our bodies. That’s a problem since chronic inflammation is a root cause of many serious diseases including heart disease, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, and cancer.”


I dislike all of this because I love my iced coffees and I love Starbucks. I mean I’m a mom I am there at least once a day. I need to survive.

Thankfully the almond milk Starbucks offers is a little bit better with only 7g of sugar for 16oz (grande size) of almond milk. And there is NO carrageenan in their almond milk. I only do a splash of almond milk in my iced coffee so maybe I am getting 1-2g of sugar. I don’t think many of us are drinking a grande iced almond milk LOL eww.


So Starbucks I am asking you to step it up and get your shit together because what you are serving is full of sugar and so much processed crap. Do you or do you not want to provide safe healthy drinks to your customers?

 

Next time you are tempted to get a coconut milk latte, order it with almond milk, your body and I thank you!
