I don’t know about you but the CBD trend seems like it’s here to stay...at least for a while. From my local grocery store to my favorite bloggers, it seems like everyone is jumping on the CBD train so I wanted to find out a little bit more.
I have been using CBD for a little over a month now for it's anti inflammatory benefits and I have noticed a a difference. This personal experience/ experimentation led me to want to know more... I reached out to my guest Health Coach Jenny Sansouci to share her experience using CBD. First let me tell you a little back story…
I first found Jenny five years ago when I was just getting into Gabby Bernstein and I started following Jenny’s blog Healthycrush.com . At this point in my life I was on a path of self discovery and spirituality which led me to sign up for the very health coaching nutrition school as Jenny. I attended The Institute For Integrative Nutrition and began my health coaching career.

Jenny shared how she has had her father who was diagnosed with cancer on a CBD regimen and it had really helped him. I knew she’d be the best person to shed some light on this topic.

So let's get started and meet Jenny!!
TMM: Introduce yourself:
Jenny: Hi! I’m Jenny Sansouci - I’m the publisher of the blog Healthy Crush, where I’ve been writing for about 10 years. I’m a certified health coach through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, and I’ve been trained by a functional medicine doctor, Dr. Frank Lipman, in New York City. I’ve been focused on CBD and cannabis for almost a year now, as a result of my dad’s cancer diagnosis.
TMM: What exactly is CBD?
Jenny: CBD stands for cannabidiol, and is one of over 100 chemical compounds, or “cannabinoids,” found in cannabis. It’s non-psychoactive and won’t make you feel high. It’s considered to be therapeutic for a lot of conditions -- some of the most common ones being insomnia, anxiety, inflammation, and pain.
TMM: How long have you taken CBD and/or recommended it?
Jenny: I started taking CBD almost a year ago, right after I found out my dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. A friend of mine recommended I look into CBD for him to compliment his cancer treatments, so I started researching right away, and bought some for both of us.
TMM: Do you have any personal success stories with positive effects using CBD?
Jenny: Yes! For myself, I was most interested in CBD for sleep and anxiety. When I first started researching CBD, I was having a lot of trouble falling asleep and staying asleep through the night. My body wasn’t fully relaxing. The first time I tried CBD at night, I was amazed at how well I slept. I started with only a small dose - about 10mg of a CBD tincture under my tongue before bed. I fell asleep peacefully and slept through the whole night.
When my dad first started taking it, the first thing he noticed was that his joint pain was completely gone within just a few days. He had previously had pain walking up and down the stairs, and that vanished. He couldn’t believe it. He was taking about 60mg of CBD per day at that time, in capsule form.
TMM: What is the difference with a CBD that says 25:1, or 1:1 with THC? Will that make you feel “under the influence”?
Jenny: CBD that’s derived from hemp will have .3% THC or less -- that’s the CBD you’ll usually see sold in stores and online in the US, which is unlikely to produce any psychoactive effects. If CBD is derived from marijuana, you’ll likely see higher amounts of THC (the compound in cannabis that makes you feel “high.” Hemp and marijuana are 2 different plants within the cannabis family.
CBD that says 25:1 CBD to THC means there’s a 25 to 1 ratio of CBD to THC in the product. 1:1 means there’s an equal amount of CBD to THC. Most people probably won’t feel much psychoactive effects from a 25:1 product, but if you’re highly sensitive to THC (I am!) you might feel something. That’s why it’s important to start very low with your dose -- and monitor how you feel. If you’re taking a 1:1 product, it’s likely you’ll feel some psychoactive effects.
TMM: What is the best option to take if you just want health benefits but no THC is is just straight 100% CBD?
Jenny: If you don’t want any psychoactive effects, I would look for a product that is formulated with little to no THC (.3% THC or less is the standard for CBD-only products).
TMM: Is it important to use a CBD product that is organic? I know it can be tricky to be “organic” since it’s not regulated, correct?
Jenny: I think it’s important to get to know the company that’s selling the CBD, ask them where their cannabis plants are grown, find out their process. The market is highly unregulated at this point, so finding companies you trust and you can trace back to where they grow it is important. While not every company will be organic certified, many are growing their plants without pesticides, and are non-GMO, and 3rd party tested for safety. Best bet is to get in touch with the company, read up on their site about their policies.
TMM: What are the methods of using CBD?
Jenny: Some of the most common methods of delivery for cbd are tinctures, vaporizers, edibles (CBD chocolate is becoming more popular, for example), or topicals like balms and lotions. I wrote a dosing guide here that covers a lot of specifics.
TMM: In your opinion where are some of the most legit places to purchase CBD?
TMM: Is there anything else you would like to share or elaborate on in terms of CBD or general health advice?
Jenny: Yes! Because this is a mamahood blog, I do want to mention that there hasn’t been enough research on CBD products when it comes to pregnancy, nursing, or children -- so if you’re questioning whether ot not to use CBD products during these sensitive times, I’d play it safe and wait to try CBD products until you’re done nursing - or at least until more research has been done. (Also, I’m not a doctor, so make sure you run everything by a trusted health care provider before starting any CBD regimen!)
