Ok ladies don’t hate me for this one but do you know what’s in your dry shampoo? It’s actually alarming! One of the biggest toxic ingredients is “fragrance” which is full of synthetic chemicals! I get that dry shampoo is a staple in life just like coffee but there’s a less toxic route. Let’s break down a few common ingredients in most dry shampoos and I’ll share this easy DIY recipe so you can make your own non-toxic one!!
Common ingredients in dry shampoo:
Alcohol while it’s not “toxic” excessive use can cause damage to the scalp and is extremely drying.
Methylpropional- which functions as a fragrance and masking ingredient, is connected with possible bioaccumulation, organ system toxicity, endocrine disruption and allergies, and contact dermatitis.
Isobutane-Isobutane and Propane are compressed gases that are used as aerosol propellants.isobutane is a hydrocarbon gas; used as a propellant in aerosolized products. Can be toxic and an allergen.
Excessive use of dry shampoos that contain alcohol can lead to long-term hair and scalp damage.
”Propylene glycol is found in shampoos, deodorants, skin care lotions and room deodorizers. Normal use of these products is not dangerous or toxic to the skin or airways. However, prolonged or excessive application can cause redness and itching to sensitive skin. Ingestion of propylene glycol could cause irritation, burning sensations to the throat and mouth, nausea and vomiting. The side effects of prolonged inhalation of propylene glycol found in room deodorizers can cause irritation of the mucous membranes, wheezing, coughing and shortness of breath. It should be noted that regular use of skin lotions and cosmetics have no reported side effects in persons without skin sensitivities, according to the Scholar Chemistry website. Propylene glycol enters the body as an alcohol and metabolizes in the body's enzyme pathways. These pathways do not mature in humans until 12 to 30 months of age. Infants and children below the age of 4 years, pregnant women and those with kidney dysfunction or in renal failure are not able to eliminate propylene glycol in the body. According to the FDA, this inability to process and eliminate this product causes potential adverse reactions in infants and pregnant women as well as those with kidney problems.”
Get a glass jar with a lid.
4 tbsp tapioca flour
4 tbsp cornstarch
4 tbsp arrowroot powder,
4 drops rosemary essential oil
6 drops lavender essential oil
Add all ingredients into jar and mix. Too apply get a loose powder brush and dip it in the powder, tap off excess powder into lid of jar. Apply directly to scalp along hairline. Brush out and style.
If you have dark hair you can add a little cacao powder to darken the powder.
Rosemary oil can counter hair loss by stimulating blood circulation in the scalp, which, in turn, promotes hair growth. Its high nutritional value and anti-inflammatory properties make it an excellent ingredient for nourishing the hair follicles and soothing the scalp.
Lavender oil is calming and antimicrobial.
I am SO excited about partnering up with Tiny Giants to bring you these two fun (healthy) and festive recipes. As we know Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, and with all the sugary treats out there these two recipes are something mama can feel good about.
For those of you that are not familiar Tiny Giants is a probiotic enriched yogurt company for young children. They have pouches in a few different flavors that all contain vegan probiotics.
As you all know we eat a vegan diet and so does Jack so I was absolutely over the moon when I found this company. Jack is obsessed with their yogurt and I feel so good knowing he’s replenishing the good bacteria in his gut, which will ultimately strengthen his digestive and immune system.
BEST part?? This company is MOM run!! YES!!!! I love supporting a fellow mama.
Now that you have a little more info let’s dive right into these two recipes.
The yogurt bark can totally be jazzed up by adding mixed berries or granola, whatever you are into! It’s a fun snack especially in the coming Spring and Summer months, or for those teething babes.
4 Vanana Banila Tiny Giants pouches
3-4 organic strawberries, sliced
8x8 inch pan
Directions: place a sheet of wax paper inside the glass pan, then squirt in your 4 pouches of Tiny Giants. Take a spoon and smooth everything out and then add your sliced strawberries on top. Place in freezer for 2 hours. Once the 2 hours have passed take the yogurt bark out and remove the wax paper and break into big pieces. Enjoy!
Hope you enjoyed mamas!!
P.S. For my local mamas they carry Tiny Giants at Frazier Farms.
Ok so today I am super excited to share Basic Invite baby shower invitations with you guys! As we all know our baby shower invitations are just as important as our actual shower, so when I discovered Basic Invite I was over the moon excited.
Basic Invite is so cool because unlike a lot of online invitation or card making companies Basic Invite is one of the few websites that allows customers the ability to order a printed sample of their actual invitation so they can see exactly how it will print as well as the paper quality before they ever have to place their final order.
I personally got the chance to do this with these baby shower invitation samples. Which by the way I had so much fun mocking up a baby shower invitation and dropping a few *cough *cough hints to my husband LOL. I literally told him “if we start trying now, then we could actually use the date on one of these invitations in November for a baby shower”... to say he nervously laughed it off is an understatement! A girl can try, right?!
Basic Invite does more than baby shower invitations as well, they do stationary, weddings, Christmas cards, you name it they can do it and customize it.
One feature I thought was genius is that they offer an address capturing service that allows customers to simply share a link on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or any other form of social media to request their friends and family’s addresses which will be stored in the customer’s account and can then be selected during the design process. Basic Invite offers recipient address printing at no cost on all Christmas card orders. I mean how cool is that? It makes the whole process of texting your mother in-law for her sister’s address all that less awkward.
With over 40 different colors for just their envelopes alone really makes them stand out as a company that truly cares about making your special memories unforgettable.
All of their envelopes are peel and seal so the envelopes can be quickly and securely closed. Another win win because no one likes the taste of envelope seal in their mouth!
Ok now let’s get to the fun stuff, the BABY SHOWER INVITATIONS!!
I had so much fun choosing and customizing three different baby shower invitations.
First up I chose the sweetest invitation with a little dear which I thought was just darling for a baby shower invite. I was able to customize the back of the card to have polka dots and I literally think it’s the sweetest thing ever.
Next up I chose the camo baby shower invitations which will more than likely be my fate with another boy. I loved that with this camo invite I was able to customize the colors so I could stick with a black and white theme but still have it be the camouflage print.
For my last one I chose a classic plaid baby shower invitations, ya know like a little hipster lumberjack vibe. This was a fun one to design because instead of the focus being on my name in big bold print I added “The Schwartz Family is having a BOY” which I think is a cool way to make it about the family on the invitation.
When you are in the process of designing your baby shower invitation they have this super cool foil feature. Foil cards are available in gold, silver, and rose gold. Customers can choose flat or raised foil on all of Basic Invite’s foil designs. I think this just adds a beautiful finishing touch to the design.
So long are the days where you spend hours on a website feeling restricted by their designs and hitting “purchase” and just praying when you get 100 invitations in the mail they look ok.
Basic Invite allows you the creative freedom to design your special moment and you can get an actual invitation sample mailed to you before you have to purchase anything. I will 100% be using them for my future card and invitation purchases.
I am excited to share that right now Basic Invite is offering 15% off with coupon code: 15FF51
Happy card making, friends!
In an effort to up my health and wellness game in 2019 (read more on that here) I decided it was finally time I took a hard look at all of the cleaning products in our house.
I have been using the Thieves cleaner from Young Living and for the past year I have been using a combo of vinegar, distilled water and lemon essential oil as a multipurpose cleaner. I like both of them very much.
Unfortunately I have a little secret and it’s called lavender scented Pine-Sol and I enjoyed it. When Jack was a baby I only allowed us to mop the floor with water and vinegar, and I am not sure why I went back to allowing the purchasing of Pine-Sol to happen now that Jack is walking.
Anything with the word “fragrance” in the ingredient list is a no-go in our home. Fragrance is a term the FDA does not regulate so a company can use any synthetic chemical and hide it under the word fragrance.
So I pulled every “cleaner” out of the cabinets and threw them away. See below!
I am an advocate for toxin-free living but I am also human and I am trying to DO better for myself and my family.
Did you know a new study out today reveals that numerous popular cleaner brands, including Glade, Clorox, Pine Sol, and the ostensibly eco-friendly Simple Green, contain chemicals that are known to cause hormone disruption, pregnancy complications, birth defects, and cancer, and can aggravate allergies. (link here)
Needless to say I have converted our house to a toxin free, chemical free home.
I wanted to take this opportunity to challenge you to do the same and I will send you a gift! Yes, you read that right. I am so committed to people changing their health that if you round up all of your chemical and “fragrance” filled products and replace them with a DIY cleaner or a safe store bought brand, I will send you a product from my TMM Beauty line. All you have to do is share a video or a picture of you throwing away your old toxic cleaners and tag me also using the #tmmhealthandwellnesschallenge . My Instagram @themodernmamahood and I will send you something! This will go until the end of January!!! xox
Clean Brands I love:
-Young Living Thieves cleaner (it smells like Christmas) I put it in a glass bottle from amazon, linked here.- -OnGuard Cleaner
-Better Life all purpose cleaner Found at your local healthy grocery store or Amazon!
-16oz glass bottle fill ¾ of the way with white vinegar the rest with distilled water and add 15 drops of lemon essential oil (optional also add 10 drops melaleuca essential oil)
GLASS BOTTLES I USE FROM AMAZON
I hope this was helpful and relatable and you can find yourself making the switch!!
Ok so yes 2019 is here and I have a resolution list a mile long! I know, it’s maybe cooler to not make one but I have a lot of goals this year for myself and for my business.
The most important thing I am focused on this year is to up my health and wellness game. I decided that as busy as I am I need to invest in some quality supplements and start exploring some different types of exercise that excites me.
I have posted a few of these on Instagram but I wanted to create a post that you could come back and reference and they’re all linked.
First I want to start with the women’s multivitamin I am taking from a company called Ritual. Ritual has engineered the perfect women’s multivitamin by figuring out what our bodies need most and they go above and beyond and use vegan Omega 3 from algae, which saves lots of little fishy lives.
The vitamin also tastes minty or like peppermint so there’s no gag reflex when swallowing it. And if I am being totally honest their packaging is super cool as well.
Next up is the FreshCap Mushrooms Thrive 6 powder. This powder comes in a 60 day supply and it does the following for you:
-Strengthen your immune system.
-Clear the fog, supercharge your focus and mental capacity.
-Shield you from disease and defend against illness.
-Finally get your body back in balance
I have known about the amazing benefits of mushrooms for years, since I was in nutrition school. I can honestly say I feel way more energized when I take this powder.
Let’s talk probiotic. I know just as well as you do that taking a probiotic daily is game changing, but I totally fell off the wagon with this one. I hate admitting that but I am human.
Our gut is the essence of our being and we MUST take care of it and replenish the bacteria necessary for it to thrive.
Next up is the Biosil (vegan) collagen supplement. First off Christie Brinkley takes this supplement and swears by it so If I can look like her as I age sign me up.
This is what you can expect to gain from taking this supplement straight from their site:
Collagen “plumps’ your skin from the inside out. It removes fine lines and wrinkles, and
prevents them from forming. In addition, collagen is essential for strong, healthy bones and joints. BioSil “turns on” the collagen-generating cells in your body known as fibroblasts.
Elastin gives your skin its ability to stretch and ‘bounce back’ (elasticity) preventing fine lines and wrinkles from forming. Elastin is also vital to the proper functioning of organs and eyes.
Keratin is the protein that’s packed into your hair shaft. It gives your hair thickness, body, strength, and elasticity. Plus, keratin gives your nails strength and clarity. Studies suggest the fact that BioSil stimulates the keratin-producing cells in your body known as keratinocytes.
Headspace is a meditation app that you may or may not be familiar with but it is super helpful no matter what stage you are at in your meditation practice.
I really love it because it’s guided and it gently reminds you when your mind can begin to wander to come back, and for me I totally need that.
You can adjust your time so if you only have 3 minutes or if you have 10 you can get something out of it.
Lagree Fit is a pilates inspired workout using the reformer machine and holy moly it’s an incredible full body workout.
Best part? It’s only 40 minutes!! I made a commitment to myself to try new types of exercise this year, I’ve been doing HIIT for 2 years and running here and there, but this is a game changer.
Reading: I am going to commit to reading 1 book a month this year. For me this is a hard one. I have a million things going on and when Jack is finally asleep the last thing I feel like doing is reading.
Essential Oils: I use oils daily and my diffusers are usually going in every room, but this year I want to really really use them. Like I want to try to use them for all that they can be used for whether that is medicinal or emotional. Stay tuned on this… I’ve got some fun EO ideas for this year!!
And last but not least I really want to be more present with my family this year. I want to put my phone down or away and connect with them. I don’t want Jack growing up always seeing his mom on her phone, because nothing is more important than my time with Jack (and Stefan LOL).
I hope this list inspires you to get out there and get your health and wellness goals met… or started!!
I wanted to share this over here on the blog after it was such a hit on Instagram. I find that making thoughtful gifts that encourage self-care are the most rewarding to give.
I love taking baths and I love epsom salts so what better way to combine a fav pastime of mine to share with you!
This is a great gift idea and even now that the holidays are over you can still make this up in a pretty glass jar or mason jar for a gift.
Here’s what you’ll need:
Fill container of your choice half way with epsom salts, add 10 drops of lavender oil and shake. Fill the rest of the jar with epsom salts and add in 10 more drops of lavender oil then top with dried rose petals.
I have linked the supplies that I used. You can find epsom salts at almost any drug store or grocery store. The rose petals I used were from Hobby Lobby but you can totally order some off Amazon.
The weather has cooled down here in San Diego and it’s time for chili. VEGAN CHILI and it’s so good!!! I have been making the recipe for a few years now and I love it so I am so happy to share it with you!

YAY! I am so excited to share this gift guide with you! I have compiled some personal favorites and some must have items for this family gift guide that I know you’ll love.

I love all of these gifts for so many reasons I can’t wait to see what you snag!
So as any normal person would be doing this time of year, I’ve been browsing Pinterest looking for cute wrapping ideas. I think the way your presents are wrapped is just as important as how your tree is decorated, ya know??
Last year we went with a basic black and green plaid wrapping paper which looked pretty against our white and black tree skirt. This year we have a dark green tree skirt from the Hearth and Hand with Magnolia collection at Target so I wanted something very basic.
When I came across the brown wrapping paper post on Pinterest I knew this was it! It’s clean and simple, but looks festive and like gift wrapping.
This is seriously such a CHEAP (in a good way) option. You can totally get creative and add bells or different size ribbon, or even a pinecone!
What I bought was from Target and Michaels Linked below:
(Everything linked above is on MAJOR sale this week for Cyber Monday so don’t miss it!!xo)
I trimmed off small branches from my own Christmas tree for the greenery you see on the present.
All in all it was under $12 for all of the supplies!! That wraps a lot of presents.
I mean, can you picture yourself showing up to your friend’s holiday party with a chic wrapped Christmas present like this? It’s basically a gift in itself LOL.
Let’s get into it!
All I did was wrap the gift in the brown wrapping paper and then I tied the red and white twine around it. If you notice I took it up high and tied my bow off towards the left side of the gift, it’s not smack dab in the middle. You can go with whatever tie off you want.
I then simply chose a stamp and pressed it down onto my already wrapped gift. I added in my clipped greenery and I was done! It was seriously so simple and so fun!
Here is my PINsperation for this exact wrapping job.
